Make A Scrapbook Page Design

May 3, 2010 by

Have you ever wanted to design your own scrapbook pages?  From a blank page?  Many people have…and many people do it successfully. So here are a few quick pointers for you as you start your journey to make a scrapbook page.

First: you must decide whether it’s the background of the page you want to design or if it’s the page layout design you want.

Second: you must decide if you will be making it a paper or digital scrapbook page. Then you can get to work.

Lets start with some of the creative scrapbook page designs you can make on paper. You can:

  1. Use rubber stamps. You choose one great stamp or many and simply stamp away.  You can stamp a frame or one sided border – or you can stamp randomly all over the page.  And viola – your favorite stamp becomes you new favorite background paper.
  2. Use a brayer. A brayer is a really cool rubber roller that you can draw patterns  directly onto OR you can run through a series of inks (via inkpad, inkdrops or other creative methods) or even paint and then roll over your paper in vertical, horizontal or random strips.
  3. Use a combination of the above. Try varying your rubber stamp images as well as the brayer designs you make…
  4. Make a tissue paper collage. Tearing completely random shapes and sizes out of different pieces of tissue paper and then adhering them (with podge) onto the sheet is extremely beautiful.  If you have never done this, it is a must do for sure. You can frame the page, border one or 2 sides or even cover the entire page if you are ambitious enough.  It creates a really cool texture let alone design on the page.
  5. Go rub-on crazy! Have you ever purchased a rub-on pack that you loved but couldn’t really find the “perfect” page to put them on?  Why not make the entire PAGE from that rub-on pack?  That rub-on pack may just BE the background design you have been looking for!
  6. Sponge it! This is one of my favorites!  I love using make-up wedge sponges and my favorite colored ink to design my cards and mats.  So why wouldn’t I love it as the page background too?

And this only a small selection of ideas.  I’ve done everything from splatter my papers with coffee, tea, juice and paint to plastering them with diluted stucco, plaster of paradise, glittered glue,  and so on.  The possibilities really are endless.

Your scrapbook page design can be whatever you can imagine it to be.  Just remember that if you want it to last a lifetime you should do your research on using only acid free, archival mediums on it.

I hope you have a blast with your scrapbook page designs.

AND – if you are looking for page designs by way of layouts…I might recommend visiting our scrapbook layouts page.
